The Pilgrimage of Hope

641 miles walked and 21,257 feet climbed over 45 days on 4 Ways
20 Perpetual Pilgrims walked the full distance joined by over 250 Day Pilgrims

The 2025 National Walking Pilgrimage of Hope

The theme of the 2025 Jubilee is ‘pilgrims of hope’ and this inspired a national walking pilgrimage with four main Ways converging at the Cathedral of St Barnabas, Nottingham, on Saturday 13th September 2025, for shared prayer and celebration. The four main Ways started at the Catholic cathedrals in Cardiff, Leeds, Norwich and London, and blessed our nations with the Sign of the Cross and with the Gospels. We strove to embody the values of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, who generously funded the initiative, of compassion, faith, prayer and community.

A small group of 'perpetual pilgrims' walked the full distance of each Way, and about 250 day pilgrims joined for one or more day stages. The pilgrims experienced generous hospitality in the parishes and communities enroute: Masses were said, blessings given, food and accommodation provided, and rucksacks transported. We were often overwhelmed by the generosity of those we encountered.

Theresa Alessandro has created a wonderful podcast which gives an overview of the Pilgrimage.

St Matthew’s Way

The western Pilgrimage of Hope Way was from Cardiff to Nottingham via St Chad's Cathedral in Birmingham and the Shrine of St Chad in Lichfield.

Catherine Manghan reflects on the ‘Hope, Joy, Laughter and Fellowship' she experienced and there are also photos and reels. On the Welsh coast path the pilgrims encountered Emmeline on her own pilgrimage to change the legal status of rivers.

Joe Northam writes about how she got involved with the Pilgrimage, on walking and courage and on the importance of getting lost!

St Mark’s Way

The northern Pilgrimage of Hope Way was from Leeds to Nottingham via St Marie's Cathedral in Sheffield and the Chapel of the Padley Martyrs.

Anna Larkin reflects on ‘The Grace of Pilgrimage’ and there are also photos and reels. Rowan Morton-Gledhill writes a wonderful daily illustrated blog.

She also recorded a short talk for BBC Radio Leeds.

St Luke’s Way

The St Luke's Way was the eastern Pilgrimage of Hope Way from Norwich to Nottingham via the National Shrine of Our Lady at Houghton St Giles and the Pontifical Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham at King's Lynn.

Terence Cavanagh prays ‘Walk With Me O My God’ and there are also photos and reels.

St John’s Way

The southern Pilgrimage of Hope Way was from London to Nottingham via the Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate & St Thomas of Canterbury in Northampton.

Anita Tozzi reflected on pilgrimage and creation: Laudato Si O Mi Signore and there are photos and reels

Eoin Sharkey tells of joining by cycle and Eddie Gilmore writes about the hospitality and food the pilgrims received.

Final Celebrations in Nottingham

On 13th September the pilgrims from all four Ways gathered in Nottingham Cathedral with Bishop Patrick McKinney for a welcoming liturgy and celebration ceilidh.

The Pilgrimage concluded with Solemn Mass for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

We were delighted to receive an Apostolic Blessing for all who took part from Pope Leo XIV.

Next Steps!

The Diocesan Ways

If you missed the Pilgrimage of Hope, or if you are inspired by it, then walking one of the Diocesan Ways could be a good next step. There is one in every diocese.

If you walk one I would be grateful for any feedback you have about the Way, and especially any route updates and changes.

After your pilgrimage remember to download your certificate of completion.

Resources

‘Walking through Scripture' is a creative new free resource by Fleur Dorrell. It's designed for any one or any group who are: about to embark on a pilgrimage, walking from one church to another, visiting a shrine or sacred place, walking as an opportunity to pray, reflect and meditate in the open air or at home and wishing to make a spiritual walk with God.

Several new resources about group walking pilgrimage will be created as the result of the experience gained by the Pilgrimage of Hope. These will be appearing over the next few weeks.

Join the walking pilgrimages to the Church of St Francis of Assisi in Nailsea to celebrate the Year of St Francis! 2026 marks 800 years since the death of St Francis of Assisi and Pope Leo XIV has declared a special Year to commemorate this. More about the Year can be found here . Francis was a pilgrim who undertook significant journeys to Rome, Santiago de Compostela and the Holy Land. He urged that all forms of hostility or conflict be avoided and that a humble and fraternal attitude be shown to those who did not share his faith. He had a great love of creation. Saturday 3rd Ocober 2026 is exactly 800 years since St Francis died, and the day before his feast day. To mark this a walking pilgrimage is planned in the Diocese of Clifton on Saturday 3rd October with two legs: The Bristol leg will start at Clifton Cathedral at 10.30am and end at the Church of St Francis of Assisi in Nailsea (9.4 miles) The Clevedon leg will start at the Franciscan church of the Immaculate Conception in Clevedon at 1pm and end at the Church of St Francis of Assisi in Nailsea (6.4 miles) The two legs will convene at 4.30pm at the church for refreshments and prayer. Those who wish can stay for the 6pm Saturday evening Vigil Mass for the Feast of St Francis. Pilgrims are welcome to register to join for one or other of the legs. Walkers do so at their own risk. Children under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Pilgrims will be responsible for carrying their own food and drink and for arranging their own transport to the start and finish. Nailsea is well served by trains to Bristol and buses to Bristol and Clevedon. More details about the walks and how to register can be found below. You can also be part of the pilgrimage by praying for the success of the event and for the safety of pilgims. You can find other ideas to mark the day here .
