Pilgrims Walk the Gospel Through North Norfolk
An annual pilgrimage through North Norfolk has brought Scripture, prayer and Christian unity together as pilgrims walked from Walsingham to Wells-next-the-Sea, reading the whole of St Mark’s Gospel along the way.
The pilgrimage has become a developing tradition in the Catholic community in North Norfolk, with participants setting out each year with a simple but ambitious aim: to read an entire Gospel together while journeying through the churches and countryside between Walsingham and Wells.
Last year, pilgrims travelled from Wells to Walsingham. This year the route was reversed, beginning at the Catholic Church of the Annunciation in Walsingham and finishing around eight hours later at the Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea in Wells-next-the-Sea.
St Mark’s Gospel was chosen as the spiritual companion for this year’s journey. Its 16 chapters lent themselves particularly well to a day in which walking, Scripture and prayer alternated along the route. At each stopping point, pilgrims read a chapter of the Gospel, reflected upon it and prayed together, often using a Taizé chant, before continuing their journey.
The route reflected the rich Christian heritage of North Norfolk, taking the pilgrims through Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and Orthodox churches, as well as a Quaker Meeting House and two village cemeteries. Although this year’s group was made up of Catholics, the pilgrimage had a strongly ecumenical character. By crossing the thresholds of churches belonging to different Christian traditions, the pilgrims were reminded of the shared Gospel which lies at the heart of Christian faith.
Dr Ian Watson, County Ecumenical Officer for Norfolk and Waveney, who took part in the pilgrimage, reflected that Christian unity is not only something to be discussed through formal dialogue, but also something towards which Christians can journey together. Each church visited retained its own distinctive history and identity, while bearing witness in its own way to Christ and the Gospel being proclaimed by the pilgrims.
The group was blessed with glorious weather, allowing participants to enjoy the North Norfolk countryside at its best. Visitors to the county who had heard about the pilgrimage also joined the walk.
By the time the pilgrims reached Wells, they had not only completed the whole of St Mark’s Gospel but had also encountered something of the remarkable Christian landscape of North Norfolk. The pilgrimage offered a reminder that journeys of faith are rarely made alone and that, step by step, Christians can grow closer both to Christ and to one another.
